She taught me to read music at her kitchen table, with the radio on and the dog asleep under it. I have never once played a piece without thinking of that room.

My mother kept a list of every person she had lent a book to. It ran to nine pages. She never once asked for one back.

When we arrived in Portland in 1987 she was the first person on the street to knock. She brought a casserole and a bus timetable, which was exactly what we needed.

Forty years of the same allotment path, and forty years of her talking me out of giving up on the raspberries. She was right every time.

She proofread my thesis in 1994 and returned it with one comment: "This is good, and it is too long." Best editorial advice I ever had.
Beatrice Lam
We sang beside each other in the choir for nineteen years. She always found the note first and never let on that she had.
